So many aliens in sci-fi films are six foot tall with four limbs. And they live on planets that are remarkably Earth-like. Dull. Dull. Dull. There is more interesting life on the seabed. Is this lack of creativity down to film studio budget restrictions? Or perhaps there is a scientific reason behind it. Dr David Fairhurst (The University of Edinburgh) asks: what is life? Find out what might happen if we really tear up the rule book and let our imagination go wild. Does life even need to be built from cells?
