Description:
Award-winning author and broadcaster. Professor of Sociology at the University of Manchester. Former Guardian columnist. Winner, Orwell Prize for Journalism 2023. His six books include: Dispatches from the Diaspora, From Nelson Mandela to Black Lives Matter, and The Speech: The Story Behind Martin Luther King’s Dream. He has written for The New York Review of Books, Granta, GQ and the Financial Times, and made several radio and television documentaries. His work 'takes us to uncomfortable places but with clarity, humanity and empathy’ (Orwell Foundation). Lives in London with his wife and two children.
