Dr Stephen Mansell (Heriot-Watt University) talks all things boron – the real fifth element! What has boron done for us and how will it shape the future? Originally ferried out of Death Valley, California, in twenty mule teams, boron has now become an important element for many high-tech applications, as well as washing powder. What is it about boron that makes it ideal for producing some of the hardest materials, yet can also be used in medicine? From Cold War rocket fuel to invisible ink, boron is far from boring.
